Marvelous Murphys

I was glad to see your article on Murphys, Calif. (“Cozy California Town Is Solid Gold,” by Judith Morgan, Dec. 10). My wife and I just returned from that area and stayed at Murphys Hotel. I would like to add a few suggestions on what to do in the Murphys area.
Mercer Caverns are located a mile north of Murphys. There are 45-minute tours that take visitors past interesting limestone formations. We took advantage of the shady trees and had a picnic lunch at tables set up near the cave’s entrance. We spent the afternoon in Calaveras Big Trees State Park, north on California 4. We took several hikes, where we enjoyed the park’s solitude.
Our most memorable meal was at Murphys Hotel. Reservations are recommended.
