The editorial was right on in urging a prompt end to the archaic law. The law was enacted during the Depression years of the ‘30s when jobs were scarce. The idea might have had some merit then, but a half-century later times have changed; there are tens of thousands of jobs waiting to be filled and tens of thousands of healthy seniors eager to fill them. But not at the cost of losing $1 for every $3 over the limit, which means a retiree earning an extra $5,000 could lose up to several months of Social Security payments.
As everyone eventually discovers, growing older brings on its own special set of problems and adjustments. It doesn’t seem fair that financial discrimination should be added to them simply because someone wants to continue leading a useful, productive life.
