More than 5,000 works of art by black artists around the country are on display this week to commemorate February as Black History Month.
The Eighth Annual Artists’ Salute to Black History Month features paintings, graphics, photography, batiks, sculpture and other pieces by more than 70 artists, said Barbara Wesson, an artist and coordinator and founder of the show. Most of the artists will be at the exhibit, today through Sunday, at Fox Hills Mall in Culver City, she said.
Local artists include Varnette P. Honeywood, who does collages and watercolors of black life styles; Kathleen Wilson, who portrays women, flowers and gardens in her paintings; Lew and Diane Harris, who sculpt “junk,” and Ramsess, who draws jazz musicians and scenes in pen and ink.
The event also includes seminars on topics such as collecting art and how to succeed as an artist. Last year’s exhibit was seen by more than 250,000 people, Wesson said.
