A 60-year-old Escondido woman died Thursday after she was ejected from a van that ran off Sweeney Pass Road, the California Highway Patrol said.

Rita Rehbock Rose died at the scene. Henry Andrew Smith, 65, was driving north at about 30 m.p.h. about 14 miles north of California 78 at 2:30 p.m. when Rose accidentally dropped cigarette ashes on his arm, causing Smith to lose control of the Toyota van, which rolled over and pinned Rose, CHP Officer Bob Melton said.
