A 35-year-old man was found dead in a Van Nuys jail cell Friday, less than 12 hours after his arrest on burglary and drug charges, the Los Angeles police said. The cause of death was unknown.
The man’s identity was not released because his family had not been located. He was found dead in a bed at 5 a.m. when jailers attempted to wake him to take him to court for an arraignment, Lt. William Hall said.
The man was in a cell with 20 other inmates, but there was no indication that he had been involved in an altercation, Hall said.
The man was arrested at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the 11900 block of Roscoe Boulevard in Sun Valley on outstanding arrest warrants for one burglary and two drug charges, Hall said.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
