Family of Man Killed by Deputies to Get $1 Million

Without comment, Los Angeles County supervisors Tuesday approved a $1-million settlement of a suit filed by the family of a man killed by sheriff’s deputies after a traffic stop.
The family of Hong Pyo Lee, 21, alleged that the Sheriff’s Department tried to cover up the March 8, 1988, shooting. The five deputies involved said Lee tried to run them over moments before they fired 15 rounds into his car, striking him nine times.
The deputies were cleared of any wrongdoing by sheriff’s homicide investigators and the district attorney’s office.
Supervisors also voted to pay $180,000 to settle a suit filed by a Los Angeles man who was injured after he was accidentially shot by a deputy. The deputy had pulled Tommie Lee Johnson, 43, over for allegedly driving erratically on the Santa Ana Freeway.
“The deputy’s handgun accidentally discharged,” according to a report to the supervisors.
