P.M. BRIEFING : GM Boosts Buyer Incentives

DETROIT — General Motors Corp.’s Oldsmobile division announced today a sweetening of its buyer incentive program--to the point of offering customer rebates on some 1991-model cars that are not even in showrooms yet.
An Oldsmobile spokesman said the offer on selected 1991 models, which range from $500 to $1,500, depending on model, is to remain competitive with rival auto makers that introduced their 1991 models earlier this year.
Oldsmobile is also offering 4.8% financing on loans up to 48 months on 1989- and 1990-model Cutlass Supreme and Cutlass Ciera cars in lieu of the consumer rebates.
That enhancement counters a similar offer announced by Ford Motor Co. this month on its Taurus and Sable sedans and wagons, as well as its Thunderbird and Cougar coupes.
