Scud Commentary a Dud: Making fun of the Scud missile, which rarely hit its targets and sometimes exploded mid-air, seemed like a natural for a humorous radio commentary from satirist Stan Freberg--until Monday. Moments after a Scud slammed into a U.S. military command center in Saudi Arabia, killing at least 12 people, the midday anchors at KNX 1070 AM were having a hard time connecting with reporters in the Persian Gulf for a live report. Instead, the station went to the daily commentary by Freberg. “Where did (the Scuds) come from, some used missile lot?” Freberg demanded. “They’re in such crummy shape, they sometimes fall apart before the Patriot missile gets there.” KNX News Director Bob Sims said that playing the commentary in the midst of reports about a successful Scud attack was “an unfortunate coincidence. If it weren’t for that junk missile actually falling and causing some casualties today, it (would be) a delightful little piece,” he said.
