Picture-Perfect: Dean Semler, director of photography for “Dances With Wolves,” took the American Society of Cinematographers prize for best cinematography of a theatrical release at the group’s fifth annual awards Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton. Winners in television were John Elsenbach (“Murder, She Wrote”), Donald M. Morgan (“Murder in Mississippi”) and Gayne Rescher (“Jackie Collins’ Lucky Chances, Part I”). The ASC’s president’s award went to 99-year-old pioneer cinematographer and special effects expert Hans Koenekamp, who began his career in 1913 as a cameraman for Mack Sennett. Honored for lifetime achievement was Charles Lang, holder of a record 18 Oscar nominations for best cinematography and an Oscar winner for “A Farewell to Arms” (1932). Los Angeles Times Arts Editor Charles Champlin received the board of governors award, citing him as a “devoted friend to cinematography and its practitioners.”
