WEEKEND PERSPECTIVE
We’ve arrived at the age where, at certain moments, perhaps surrounded by a passel of attentive ears, we can start off a sentence with the phrase, “In our youth . . . “
This is one of those moments.
What we remember are those countless summer days spent outdoors, flipping baseball cards.
All you needed was some sidewalk space, some elbow room and the feeling (long since gone now) that spending such idle time in such an idle pursuit was a very fine thing indeed.
The cards came neatly wrapped in waxy paper, four or five to a pack, with a piece of chewing gum thrown in for good measure.
So we would chew, and flip.
Mantle, Mays, Maris, Snider, Robinson, Hodges, Berra, Ford.
All fluttering silently, slowly down to this playing field that we had invented.
A card show featuring baseball, football, basketball and hockey cards will be held beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Airport Marina Hotel, 8601 Lincoln Blvd., Los Angeles. Admission is $2 adults, $1 children. For information, call (213) 649-3515
