Drag racer Gary Ormsby, whose quarter-mile run of 4.881 seconds at 296.05 m.p.h. at Topeka, Kan., in 1990 ranks as the fastest in National Hot Rod Assn. history, died of intestinal cancer at a hospital at Roseville, Calif.
Ormsby, 49, drove two decades on the professional circuit and survived several devastating crashes, including two end-over-end flips in his top fuel racer at more than 250 m.p.h.
