OSLO : The Nobel Odds
President Bush is one of 62 people and 27 organizations nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, which will be announced in the Norwegian capital Monday. Others mentioned among assumed front-runners for the award include Czechoslovak President Vaclav Havel and Lithuanian President Vytautas Landsbergis.
Two outside candidates are women: Chai Ling, the Chinese woman student leader; and, increasingly, Aung San Suu Kyi, a human rights leader in Myanmar who has been under house arrest for opposing the authoritative regime.
The prestigious prize could also go to a worldwide group involved in humanitarian efforts, with the Salvation Army and the Red Cross often mentioned.
