Unemployment Reaches 10.2%: The figure is the highest since the recession eight years ago, the government reported. It said unemployment jumped from 9.8% in August to 10.2% in September, as 31,600 joined the ranks of the jobless. Meanwhile, the number of Australians receiving government unemployment payments in September rose 1.3% to 718,748. Employment Minister John Dawkins said the figures were expected. He added that drastic government budget changes are unwarranted.
