ROUNDUP : CSUN Avenges Volleyball Loss

Freshman Ana Kristich contributed 14 kills and recorded a .632 hitting percentage, and teammate Nancy Nicholls led all players with 15 kills as the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team avenged an early season loss to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a 15-5, 15-10, 15-12 sweep of the Mustangs on Friday night at Matador Gym.
Kristich, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from La Habra High, was 14 of 19 on kill attempts and also added three blocks as Northridge (11-8) won its third match in a row. The Matadors fell in four games to Cal Poly SLO last month in the Northridge Invitational tournament, which was won by the Mustangs.
Nicholls added six blocks and 15 digs, Karen Scholl finished with 11 kills and 20 digs, and setter Alison Wool totaled 54 set assists and 12 digs for the Matadors.
Cal Poly SLO (12-8), which finished with a .139 hitting percentage, was led offensively by Sonja Van Winden (13 kills) and Meygan Androvich (11).
Northridge will conclude its three-match homestand Thursday night against Wyoming.
MEN’S SOCCER
Oxnard 2, Mission 1--The Condors broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second half of the Western State Conference match on a deflected shot.
Mission (4-6-1, 2-2) had taken a 1-0 lead on Armando Garcia’s goal--with an assist from Ervin Aervalo--midway through the first half, but Oxnard tied the score 10 minutes later on a penalty kick by Martin Escoto.
Mission goalie Martin Zuniga had six saves.
Oxnard is 2-1-1 in conference play.
Viterbo College (Wis.) 2, The Master’s 1--Momir Horvatek scored in the 73rd minute to narrow Master’s deficit to one goal, but the host Mustangs (6-8) were unable to score again in the nonconference match.
COLLEGE WATER POLO
Valley 11, Santa Monica 9--Robert Brown scored a team-high three goals for host Valley, and Pat Karayan added a pair in the Western State Conference match.
Valley led 8-4 at halftime, 9-5 at the end of the third quarter, and 11-7 midway through the final period before withstanding a late Santa Monica rally.
Valley is 13-7-3 overall, 4-1 in WSC play.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Crossroads d. Campbell Hall, 15-12, 16-14, 15-12--Dana Peterson had six kills for Campbell Hall (6-4, 5-3) in a Delphic League match at home.
HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO
San Clemente 13, Harvard-Westlake 12--The Wolverines (18-2) yielded a goal with nine seconds left and lost a quarterfinal match in the Sunny Hills tournament. Lance Weidner scored four goals for Harvard, and teammate Ryan Salceda added three goals.
Sophomore goalie Peter Kiefer had six saves and two assists for the Wolverines, who were ranked No. 2 in the 3-A Division. San Clemente (15-1), ranked second among 4-A teams, received three goals from Larry Laster.
