OUTLOOK
Newport Harbor created the biggest stir of last year’s postseason when retired Oregon State Coach Ralph Miller, Jakosky’s father, helped her coach the Sailors’ during the Southern Section playoffs because she was pregnant. Jakosky, who gave birth to a girl the day before the Sailors’ loss to Lompoc in the quarterfinals, is pregnant again but isn’t due until June. Even so, there are plans for Miller to make a couple of trips south and help out again. There’s no doubt, however, that this is Jakosky’s team, and in her third season, she has turned around a program that used to take a beating in the league. The team has a solid nucleus in Ross, a second-team all-division selection who averaged 17 points, and McLaren, a first-team all-league player who averaged 12, and Jakosky believes it will be among the top four teams in the balanced league. For that to happen, Heads and Evarts, who got some varsity experience as freshmen last season, must continue to develop. “Everybody knows about Maureen and Michaela, but we feel if Gina and Genevieve develop throughout the season, it’s going to be difficult to take care all of us,” Jakosky said.
