TENNIS ROUNDUP : Swiss Beat Czechs, Win Hopman Cup

Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere and Jakob Hlasek scored singles victories, giving Switzerland a 2-1 victory over Czechoslovakia and its first title in the Hopman Cup at Perth, Australia.
Maleeva-Fragniere beat Helena Sukova, 6-2, 6-4, and Hlasek defeated Karel Novacek, 6-4, 6-4.
Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia defeated Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), in the Australian Hardcourt championships at Adelaide, Australia, but might have to withdraw from today’s semifinals because of an elbow injury.
Ivanisevic is scheduled to play Bryan Shelton, who beat Rodolphe Gilbert of France, 7-5, 6-4.
Alexander Volkov of Russia beat Libor Nemecek of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-4, to reach today’s semifinals of the BP Nationals at Wellington, New Zealand.
Volkov will face fourth-seeded Malivai Washington, who advanced when Diego Nargiso of Italy withdrew because of an ankle injury while holding a 6-3, 2-3 lead.
Jeff Tarango upset second-seeded Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, 7-6 (14-12), 6-3.
Debbie Graham overpowered Mana Endo of Japan, 6-2, 6-3, and advanced to today’s semifinals of the Danone Queensland Open at Brisbane, Australia.
Graham, former NCAA champion at Stanford, will face Rachel McQuillan of Australia.
