A suspected drunk driver ran a red light and slammed into a police car Monday morning, injuring himself and an officer, authorities said.
The suspect, Paulino Gonzalez Olmos, 25, of Vista, suffered moderate injuries and was listed in stable condition at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.
The injured officer, Jonathan Cherney, was released from Irvine Medical Center after being treated for minor injuries, said Officer Angel Johnson of the California Highway Patrol, which routinely investigates accidents involving police officers.
Johnson said Olmos was traveling east on Irvine Center Drive at about 40 m.p.h. and failed to stop at a red light at the Culver Drive intersection at about 2 a.m. His car rammed into Cherney’s police car, which was traveling north on Culver Drive.
