NEWPORT BEACH — An 80-year-old woman who apparently suffered a heart attack Thursday lost control of her car and crashed into a wall, police said.
The lone driver, Lota Hilbert of Corona del Mar, was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Police said Hilbert was driving south on Coast Highway approaching the Newport Boulevard overpass. Her car struck the curb, crossed over the northbound lanes and struck the concrete abutment of the overpass about 2:27 p.m., police said.
Investigators closed one northbound lane of Coast Highway for about an hour so they could remove the car.
Police said they were awaiting autopsy results to determine whether Hilbert died before her car collided with the concrete wall.
