‘Early Start’ Program Aims to Prevent Dropouts

El Camino College and Southern California Edison will offer “Early Start,” an educational program of academic and personal enrichment classes for “at-risk” students, in the Inglewood and Centinela Valley school districts.
The program targets students with a high risk of dropping out of school. El Camino College will work with the two districts to identify 450 eighth-grade students to participate in campus tours and an orientation this spring.
Beginning in July, 75 selected ninth-grade students will attend a four-week summer academy at the college that will focus on math, English, computer competency and learning skills, said Edison Area Manager Ted Porter.
Edison is supporting the Early Start program with a grant to the California Community College Foundation.
