A 30-year-old man drowned Thursday afternoon while swimming off Black’s Beach, possibly the victim of powerful rip currents, San Diego lifeguards said.
The Latino, whose name was not released, was reported missing about 2 p.m. at the popular but unguarded stretch of beach north of La Jolla. Despite an intense search by lifeguards and a Sheriff’s Department helicopter crew, his body was not found until 3:21 p.m., lifeguard James Frazee said.
“Even though the surf isn’t really big at all right now, the rip currents are strong along the whole coastline,” Frazee said. “We’ve got tremendous rip currents.”
In a separate incident, lifeguards were called out at 7:45 p.m. Thursday to search the waters around Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach. A caller to 911 reported that a bodysurfer wearing a black wet suit had not surfaced, but a search by divers turned up nothing, officials said.
