Pomona : $25,000 for Anti-Gang Effort
Responding to pleas for more money to combat gangs, the City Council has voted to use $25,000 in federal money for the Soledad Enrichment Action program instead of a homeless shelter.
The decision raises to $40,000 the amount budgeted by the city for Soledad Enrichment Action, an agency that tries to deter young people from joining gangs.
The council shifted the money away from the Pomona Mission Transitional Shelter, a 40-bed facility that has been converted from a motel to a homeless shelter by owner Burnell McColloum.
The Community Life Commission had recommended the allocation to the shelter, but Councilwoman Nell Soto said she puts a higher priority on helping youths.
