Caltech has received a gift of $1.5 million from the George Hoag Family Foundation of Los Angeles to establish the George Grant Hoag Professorship. The first Hoag professor will be Sunney Ignatius Chan, professor of chemical physics and biophysical chemistry.
Hoag was a member of the Caltech Board of Trustees from 1939 until his death in 1948.
Chan, who received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, joined the Caltech faculty in 1963. He is known for his spectroscopic studies in biology and for his research on the structure of membrane proteins that process energy in cells.
