Compton : Lakers Star to Hold Training Camp for Inner-City Youths
- Share via
Lakers basketball star James Worthy plans to offer a training camp for inner-city youths in Compton in July.
Worthy told a recent City Council meeting that he hopes the three-day basketball seminar, which will be offered to about 400 seventh- to 12th-graders, will instill a sense of discipline and focus in the teen-agers. The camp fee will be $40 to $50 a day.
Worthy said he will ask a track-and-field star, a professional football player and local professionals, such as doctors and lawyers, to join him in the seminar, which will encourage youths to strive for higher goals.
The camp will be held at Compton College, Worthy said. Information on the camp and on possible scholarships will be distributed through the Compton schools or can be obtained from Worthy’s manager, Frank Wheaton, at (213) 979-9000.
