World IN BRIEF : CUBA : Castro’s Uprising Will Go Unmarked

For the first time in 33 years, there will be no public festivities in Havana today to observe the anniversary of the start of Fidel Castro’s revolution against the right-wing dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. Traditionally, as many as 1 million Cubans have gathered in the Plaza of the Revolution on July 26 to hear Castro speak on the state of the nation. But this year he will address citizens via satellite from Spain, where he traveled to attend last week’s summit of Latin American and Iberian leaders. The day marks the anniversary of Castro’s 1953 guerrilla attack on the Moncada barracks. The military engagement began a six-year struggle that ended with Batista’s overthrow.
