A stolen car crashed into a boutique early Monday and burst into flames, gutting the shop.
A caller reported seeing a car crash through the front of The Guatemala, an accessory shop, at 4:10 a.m., said John Chambers, Fire Department battalion chief. The store is in a shopping center at 1055 W. 1st St.
“When we arrived on scene, not only was the car completely inside but it was on fire and so was the building,” he said.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries to their hands when they pried open the doors of the burning car, believing there were people inside, Chambers said. The car was empty, and police said it had been stolen.
The fire was contained in 20 minutes by 20 firefighters, Chambers said. The blaze caused $120,000 in damage to the building and its contents. Two units next to the shop also were damaged by smoke, Chambers said.
