NEWPORT BEACH : Schools to Form Budget Advice Unit

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District is looking for 14 volunteers to form a Citizens Budget Advisory Board to help school board members better understand what the community wants from its school dollar.
Board members decided to create such a committee a few months ago when several parents and teachers complained of having no say when the time came for the board to cut programs to save money.
Now, according to board members, residents will better be able to have their opinions heard on issues of school spending. The board, however, will remain “strictly advisory,” said board President Forrest Werner.
Supt. John W. Nicoll said the school board will soon start work on the 1993-94 budget and would like to get “broad-based reactions” from the public through the 14 volunteers on the board.
The committee will consist of people from all over the district, possibly two from each of the seven trustees’ areas, school officials said. Volunteers are asked to write a letter to Nicoll at P.O. Box 1368, Newport Beach, Calif. 92663.
