Water Polo Club Team Tops Tritons in Finals

Sophomore Marcello Giulianotti scored three goals to lead UC San Diego past UC Riverside, 13-3, but the Tritons lost to Sunset San Diego, 11-9, in the final of the Triton Invitational Water Polo Tournament at Canyonview Pool.

No. 11 UCSD is 3-0, however, because Sunset San Diego is a club team of All-Americans. Kevin Vance and Mike Nalu each scored three goals for the Tritons in the final against Sunset. Former UCSD standout Jason Brown led Sunset with three.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Freshman Carin Pugh scored three goals and UCSD erupted for nine total in a 9-0 defeat of Occidental College in the 1992 opener at Triton Soccer Stadium. Daphne Farnum had two goals and two assists and Katy Dulock had four assists. UCSD outshot Occidental, 25-0.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The U.S. women’s national volleyball team, minus four starters from the 1992 Olympic bronze medal squad, lost to Japan, 11-15, 15-5, 15-6, 17-16, in Hawaii. Japan completed a sweep of a five-match series.

Former Hawaii All-American Teee Sanders led the U.S. with 26 kills and three blocks. Two-time Olympian Tammy Liley had 23 kills and two blocks. The U.S. won’t play again until Oct. 16 in Hong Kong.

MEN’S SOCCER

San Diego State and Cal State Sacramento traded second-half goals en route to a 1-1 tie at SDSU.

AUTO RACING

Ed Hale of El Cajon out-raced Bob Thompson of El Cajon and Gary Manlow of El Cajon on the final lap of the 40-lap Mac Tools Grand Prix sportsman stock race Cajon Speedway late Saturday. It was Hale’s 96th victory at the track.

Hale had battled Jerry Gay and John Borneman for the lead before Gay encountered engine trouble on the 19th lap and Borneman got tangled with Dennis Woodbridge and crashed into the wall on the 38th lap.

BASKETBALL

Former Morse High standout Cliff Levingston, a member of the two-time defending NBA champion Chicago Bulls, will return to his San Diego alma mater to distribute tickets for his 5th annual All-Star Basketball Classic today. Levingston said he will present tickets to Morse High students, giving them the rare opportunity to see NBA players take part in a fund-raiser game at the San Diego Sports Arena Thursday at 7 p.m.
