First ‘Sootless’ Natural Gas Transit Bus Engine Approved: The California Air Resources Board, which regulates air pollution from vehicles in the state, approved the fourth engine style--and the first to use compressed natural gas--in its program to replace smoky city buses. The engine, designed by Cummins Engine Co. of Columbus, Ohio, emits only a fifth of the particulates allowed under ARB standards required of all 1992 new models. The ARB previously approved a different engine for use on school buses.
