The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted unanimously to appoint county Assistant Auditor Thomas O. Mahon to succeed Auditor-Controller Norman R. Hawkes when he retires on Dec. 31.
“He is a very dedicated person,” Supervisor Vicky Howard said. “He is always there.”
Supervisor John K. Flynn added: “In addition, he has a characteristic that is absol utely essential. That is the characteristic of being trustworthy.”
Mahon, who has served as assistant auditor for nearly 20 years, said he was pleased to receive the top job, which carries a base salary of $91,910. He said he plans to run for the seat in 1994 when Hawkes’ term expires.
“I’m very pleased,” Mahon said. “That’s the reason I’ve been the assistant for so long. I’ve been hoping to get it.”
Mahon graduated from the U. S. Military Academy, studied further at the Naval Academy and received his master’s degree from New York University.
“Tom is unsurpassed in his knowledge of county government finance,” Hawkes said. “His leadership abilities are crucial to getting this county through the tough financial times ahead.”
