WATTS : Gift Will Allow More Cancer Tests

The Watts Health Foundation Inc., the recipient of $50,000 worth of new mammography equipment from a Christian relief organization, expects to double the number of women it screens annually for breast cancer, officials said.
The foundation provides 1,500 mammographies each year at its Watts health center, across the street from the Martin Luther King Jr. Shopping Center.
The equipment--an X-ray device, mammography machine and a film processor--will enable the foundation to serve another 1,500 women at its United Health Plan medical center in Compton at 4200 E. Compton Blvd. The center serves women from Compton, Watts, Downey, Long Beach and other neighboring communities.
“The beauty of this unit is that we will be able to provide screenings on site,” said Dr. Chierry Poyotte, chief physician at the Compton medical center. “If we had a unit here, we would be able to get all of those patients who choose not to go to other facilities (we refer them to).”
The cost for the service, normally $125 to $250, will be determined by each patient’s ability to pay, said Gerri Landry, the foundation’s radiology manager. The service is free to United Health Plan members.
