Aztecs’ Barefield Ineligible, to Miss Five Games

Senior guard Ray Barefield will miss the first two exhibition and five regular-season games of the San Diego State basketball season because he is ineligible to compete this fall, Aztec Coach Tony Fuller said Friday.
Barefield repeated a class in the fall of 1991 that he had taken in summer school at Fresno State--repeated classes don’t count toward the NCAA 24-credit per year rule.
Baregood is in academic good standing at SDSU but is three credits short for fall eligibility. He could be eligible as soon as fall semester grades are posted, and is expected to be able to play in the Texaco Star Classic Dec. 18.
“We will miss Ray’s experience and leadership on the court,” said Fuller. “We look forward to his return to competition in mid-December.”
