IBM Announces New Mainframe Strategy: IBM introduced a set of powerful additions to its mainframe computer line that can be more easily used with non-IBM systems and software. It also said it is abandoning its standard price list. The move is part of International Business Machines’ effort to cope with a shift in the commercial computing market away from the big, multimillion-dollar machines that were long one of the company’s main sources of revenue. The company said the new strategy will allow IBM to focus on a $150-billion market expected to grow 7% annually over the next five years. It said its new pricing approach will allow customers to negotiate the cost of packages that include hardware, software and service.
