COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Pierce Ups Win Streak to 24 in WSC Tennis Play

Pierce College played without its No. 1 player Tuesday but still had enough depth to sweep Glendale, 9-0, in a Western State Conference tennis match at Glendale.
The victory was the Brahmas’ 24th consecutive in Western State Conference play. Pierce is 14-0, 9-0 in WSC action this season. The Brahmas lead second-place Santa Barbara in the conference standings by two matches with three to play.
Pierce Coach Paul Xanthos rested No. 1 singles player Al Martinez to give Favio DeMarco a chance to play against Glendale and DeMarco responded with a pair of 6-2 wins at singles. He then joined John Kearsley to post a 6-4, 6-0 win in doubles play.
Vanya Nadali and Philip Leonhardt also stood out for Pierce as both players lost just a game each in sweeping to a combined four singles wins. They later teamed to register a 6-2, 6-2 doubles victory.
Glendale is 2-6 in conference play.
BASEBALL
Occidental 6, Master’s 5--Mark Allen drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Tigers to a nonconference victory at Occidental.
Allen was one for four with a run-scoring single in the seventh inning. Freshman right-hander Chris Morris pitched five innings in relief to earn the win.
Occidental is 10-7-2.
Mission 5, Compton 1--Right-hander Josh Brown (8-0) scattered nine hits en route to his sixth complete game in a Southern California Athletic Conference victory at Mission.
Brown, a sophomore from Birmingham High, struck out three and walked one.
Mission (17-7, 8-2) scored all of its runs during a seventh-inning rally highlighted by a two-run, two-out bases-loaded single by Robert Garcia.
Canyons 9, Bakersfield 5 (10 inns.)--Bakersfield’s Matt Torres took a no-hitter and a 5-1 lead into the eighth inning before Canyons rallied.
Torres was removed after Ted Kiester led off the eighth with a single to center. The Cougars (17-4, 14-2 in Western State Conference play) tied the score on run-scoring singles by Kirk Fellows and Keith Halcovich.
In the 10th, Fellows, who had three runs batted in, doubled in two runs to break the tie. Halcovich pitched 3 2/3 innings for his first victory.
Chaffey 5, Antelope Valley 3--Marauder pitcher Ryan Wilson (1-6) was leading, 1-0, when he gave up a third-inning grand slam, which accounted for all the runs Chaffey would need for a Foothill Conference win.
Antelope Valley pulled to within 4-3 before Chaffey added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to close the scoring.
Jaime Ortega was two for three for Antelope Valley (4-15, 3-9 in conference play).
Moorpark 5, Glendale 4--The Vaqueros fell despite two home runs by Lance Evans and a strong performance by pitcher Mike McMullen (3-4).
McMullen went the distance, striking out eight, for Glendale (12-11, 8-9 in WSC play). Moorpark scored two runs in the seventh to tie the score, then sent home the winning run in the eighth on a fielder’s choice.
Evans hit two two-run homers, one in the third and the other in the fifth inning, to account for all of Glendale’s runs.
