Jets Trade O’Brien to Green Bay

Ken O’Brien, the New York Jets starting quarterback for most of the past nine years, was traded Monday to the Green Bay Packers for a fifth-round draft choice.
O’Brien’s days were numbered when the Jets obtained Boomer Esiason from Cincinnati last month to compete with Browning Nagle for the starting job.
O’Brien is second to Joe Namath on the Jets’ all-time career passing list with 24,386 yards and started 104 games with New York. Last year, he was used to back up Nagle, a virtual rookie who struggled and was eventually replaced by O’Brien.
The Jets also announced the signing of tight end James Thornton from the Chicago Bears.
