Trail Closures OKd After Heavy Rains

Although the rainy season is months away, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area has implemented a policy authorizing trail closures to the public after intense periods of rainfall, officials said Friday.

The policy will be implemented immediately following significant rainfall that causes surface soil to rut or become liquefied. It affects about 10 miles of trails in Ventura County. Field staff will be responsible for reporting damage to the walkways.

Supt. David Gackenbach said keeping hikers off the paths during the rainy periods will reduce damage.
