El Monte : Student Aid Bill Advances
The state Senate on Monday unanimously approved a bill by Assemblywoman Hilda L. Solis (D-El Monte) that would save a program helping low-income and minority students go to college.
“It is important for us to academically prepare our students for the future and to ensure that those students who have been historically underrepresented in colleges and universities are adequately prepared,” Solis said.
The bill renews the California Student Opportunity and Access Program, whose funding runs out next June. The program provides tutoring and financial aid services to high school students, and tutoring for elementary and junior high school students.
Solis said she is optimistic the bill will be signed by Gov. Pete Wilson because he has previously supported the program and it received bipartisan support in the state Senate and Assembly.
