One Scoop or Two: Day’s Pay or a Few?

BEIJING — Beijing residents can now start licking ice cream cones from Baskin-Robbins--provided they want to spend a full day’s pay to do so.
The Glendale-based company opened its first Chinese store Monday. But Baskin-Robbins said it has to charge 9 yuan, or about $1.50 a scoop--almost as much as the average Beijing worker earns in a day--to cover the high tariff on the ice cream, imported from Peterborough, Ontario.
