Board May Mark Anti-Drug Week

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors today will consider adopting a resolution recognizing the week of Oct. 23-31 as Red Ribbon Week, when students and adults make a commitment against drug abuse.
The program, which originated in 1986 after federal agent Enrique Camarena was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico, is designed to create an awareness of the drug abuse problem and to build support for the creation of a drug-free America.
The sheriff’s DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program will participate in the effort by distributing red ribbons to anyone who makes a commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.
This year’s Red Ribbon Campaign theme is “Drug-Free and Proud.”
