COSTA MESA : New Animal Shelter Taking In Strays

A new animal shelter with a no-kill policy has begun taking in the city’s stray, injured and vicious animals.
The shelter, which is in Huntington Beach and operated by the Orange County Humane Society, is expected to house about 1,500 dogs and cats found annually in Costa Mesa, said Police Lt. Ron Smith, an animal control officer. It opened Friday.
The city has contracted the Bayshore Animal Hospital in recent years, but that smaller facility could not house and feed stray animals indefinitely and, as a result, put hundreds of dogs and cats to sleep each year.
The City Council voted 5 to 0 on Oct. 4 to make the switch.
The new shelter is at 21632 Newland St., Huntington Beach.
