NORTHRIDGE : Physician Receives Education Award

A Northridge doctor has won one of the nation’s most prestigious awards for a family practice physician.

Eugene (Skip) Felmar, director of the family practice residency program at Santa Monica Hospital, has been awarded the Thomas W. Johnson Award by the American Academy of Family Physicians. The periodic award for educational contributions is the only one given by the professional group, which has about 60,000 members nationwide.

Felmar, 63, a San Fernando Valley native, is a graduate of the University of Southern California and the California College of Medicine. He began practicing medicine in 1956.

“He’s one of the few physicians who has done it all,” said Daniel Lee, chief resident at Santa Monica Hospital, who works under Felmar. Lee said Felmar’s broad experience in pediatrics, internal medicine and research makes him a good teacher.

“He’s willing to devote 110% of his time to teaching,” Lee said.

Felmar, who oversees residents and treats patients, said he was “kind of blown away” by the award, which was presented to him last month.
