GTE Loses Cable TV Project Appeal: The company’s request to continue operating a cable system in Cerritos was rejected when the Federal Communications Commission said GTE Corp. failed to demonstrate that it would suffer irreparable harm if a stay of its earlier ruling was not granted. GTE had been testing video services under an FCC waiver since June, 1989. In November, the FCC rescinded the waiver, expressing concern about the affiliation between GTE and the local cable company. Although the federal Cable Act of 1984 prohibits phone companies from providing cable and phone services in the same markets, Bell Atlantic Corp., the Philadelphia-based Baby Bell, won a ruling earlier this year that will allow it to offer cable services in its phone markets.
