6 Killed, 30 Hurt as Muslims, Croats Battle in Bosnia

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Muslim-led forces shelled the central Bosnian town of Vitez and battled Croatian troops in surrounding villages Sunday, killing six people and wounding 30, authorities said.
Among the dead were three children.
A U.N. source in Vitez described the fighting as a limited offensive by the Bosnian army, which has surrounded a Croatian enclave.
“The offensive was countered by Croatian forces, but the extent of the counterattack is not yet known,” the source said.
Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Muslim president, Alija Izetbegovic, flew out of Sarajevo for peace talks in Bonn several hours behind schedule after a shell hit the center of the airport runway.
A U.N. Protection Force spokesman in the Bosnian capital blamed the shelling on Bosnian Serb forces surrounding the city.
Izetbegovic told reporters that he was pessimistic about the outcome of the talks, attended also by Croatian President Franjo Tudjman and international mediators Lord Owen and Thorvald Stoltenberg.
