Honoring the Cowboy-Humorist

Funny, with a common sense repartee that made the masses chuckle and the politically influential blush, Will Rogers endeared himself to all in the 1920s and ‘30s. Enhancing the memory of the cowboy humorist-philosopher, trick roper and actor, is his 186-acre ranch site, intact and immaculate above the state beach that bears his name in Pacific Palisades.

On Friday and Saturday, a celebration will be held to honor the 50th anniversary of the year Betty Rogers, Will’s widow, turned the property over to the state. Many of the things that best define Rogers will be a part of the event, including trick roping, storytelling, horse shows and polo (which Will and his two sons, Will Jr. and Jimmy, had in common).

There will also be demonstrations of weaving and wood carving, Native American dancing, cowboy poets, branding and roping. On Friday a historic re-enactment and Will Rogers Symposium will take place noon-4:30 p.m. The other events are Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Will Rogers State Historic Park is located off Sunset Boulevard.
