SIMI VALLEY : Planners Approve Recyling Proposal

A plan that would force existing and future Simi Valley housing developments to set aside specific areas for recycling dumpsters has been approved by the Simi Valley Planning Commission.
The commission agreed Wednesday night to forward the proposal to the City Council for final approval. If passed, it will revise Simi Valley’s current recycling ordinance and bring the city closer to state-mandated recycling goals, city officials said.
The state requires cities to divert 25% of their trash away from landfills by 1995 by setting up new recycling and composting programs. Cities must divert 50% of their trash by Jan. 1, 2000.
Simi Valley’s plan would require developers to include specific areas for recycling bins in their development proposals. And existing housing projects would be required to set up recycling areas before they could receive new city permits.
The proposal passed on a 4-0 vote at Wednesday night’s Planning Commission meeting. Commission Chairman Dave McCormick was absent.
