The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday approved the purchase of 31 vans to serve 15 community centers that serve the elderly and disabled.
The program will provide door-to-door service for 50 cents a ride. According to officials, demand for that type of transit service is increasing.
The $1.7-million program is designed to augment the city Transportation Department’s CITYRIDE and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Metro Access systems, which also shuttle seniors and the disabled door to door.
The service will be phased in over 18 months. The eight-passenger vans will be run by nonprofit organizations already working under contract with the Department of Aging to provide social, nutritional and home services.
