ANAHEIM : Zemel Proposes More Scrutiny of Budget

In the wake of Orange County’s fiscal disaster, Councilman Bob Zemel this week proposed increasing public scrutiny of the city budgetary process.
At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Zemel recommended that a different city department’s budget be examined each month. Currently, the city conducts a series of comprehensive budget workshops before adopting a final budget in July.
Under Zemel’s proposal, the public would be invited to attend the workshops, which would discuss goals, spending and investment policies.
“This proposal will provide full disclosure of the operations of our local government to its citizens,” Zemel said.
City Manager James D. Ruth said Zemel’s proposal will be reviewed and considered at a council meeting by the end of February.
