Food 4 Less Supermarkets Inc.: The La Habra-based supermarket operator had a net loss of $5.4 million for its second quarter ended Jan. 7, compared with profit of $100,000 for the year-earlier period. Sales rose slightly to $806 million from $799.6 million. For the first half, the company lost $8.7 million on sales of $1.4 billion. That compares with a net loss of $1 million on sales of $1.4 billion for the prior-year period. The company said earnings were affected by the down-time associated with the conversion of nine Viva and two Boys supermarkets to the Food 4 Less warehouse format and the cost of opening new stores.
