Santa Margarita 60, Canyon 40--Allen Krist scored 17 points and had nine rebounds to lead the visiting Eagles to the quarterfinals.
Canyon (12-16) gave the county’s fifth-ranked team all it could handle for three quarters before Santa Margarita (25-2) pulled away.
The Comanches led, 8-7, after one quarter as the result of a slow-down offense. Krist scored eight of his game-high total in the first half as the Eagles built an eight-point lead.
After Krist gave Santa Margarita a 30-22 lead midway through the third quarter, Canyon came to life behind Ryan Walker. Walker hit three consecutive baskets to cut Santa Margarita’s lead to 30-28. But the Eagles’ Scott Balo responded with a two three-pointers to put the game out of reach.
Walker, Canyon’s leading scorer, finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
