Zamudio Needs to Defeat Stewart to Earn Title Shot

WOODLAND HILLS — Ysaisa Zamudio is a ranked contender, has fought for a world championship, and needs a victory to set up another title shot.

Sammy Stewart would settle for taking over Zamudio’s position as a ranked contender.

A victory tonight at the Warner Center Marriott would move either boxer closer to his wish. Zamudio and Stewart will meet in the 10-round main event of a six-bout boxing card in the hotel’s Grand Ballroom. First bell is at 7:30.

Zamudio, from Blythe, Calif., is ranked sixth among flyweights by the World Boxing Council. He has a record of 36 victories, five losses and a draw, with 13 of his victories by knockout. Stewart, who moved to Los Angeles after representing Liberia in the 1988 Olympics, is 10-1-1 with four knockouts.

In his last fight, Stewart won a decision over Joe Manzano, the state bantamweight champion. Zamudio is coming off a loss to world champion Yuri Arbachakov.

Paolino Gonzalez (9-5, seven knockouts) of Mexicali, Mexico, has replaced Joshua Renteria against Jaime Ocegueda (10-1-2, six knockouts) of Pico Rivera in a junior welterweight bout scheduled for eight rounds. Renteria has a knee injury and will miss three weeks of training.

Simi Valley heavyweight Jim Mullen, who suffered his only loss as a professional at the Marriott two months ago, returns to face Sione Ulanga (0-3) of St. George, Utah, in a four-round bout.

Mullen, a former kick-boxing champion, is 5-1 with two knockouts.
