LOS ANGELES : LAPD Marks Anniversary of Rookie Officer’s Slaying

Police Chief Willie L. Williams presented the family of slain rookie Officer Christy Lynn Hamilton on Wednesday with her service pistol, medals and other paraphernalia to mark the first anniversary of her death.

In a Parker Center ceremony, Hamilton’s daughter, Kelley Steven, accepted the memorial “shadow box,” a glass-topped wooden case containing the policewoman’s 9-millimeter Beretta, two medals, uniform buttons, handcuffs and other duty items.

“She died doing what she loved, and I am at peace knowing that my mother realized her dream,” Steven said. “Thank you for recognizing my mother for what she was. She is and will always remain our hero.”

About 75 officers, civilians and onlookers watched the brief ceremony, which was held at the outdoor memorial erected in honor of the Los Angeles Police Department’s dead.

Hamilton, 45, was killed four days after graduating from the Police Academy when a teen-ager fired an assault rifle at officers responding to reports of gunfire in Northridge.
